Steve James is a multi-instrumentalist folk blues musician from New York. Lead Belly and Josh White were among his earliest influences.

He has been quoted as saying that what he liked about the older players was how they were able to express complex ideas without loosing the aura of simplicity. He spoke about the place where the primitive and the highly refined meet.
